There are 74 Crystal Shards to collect in Kirby 64, though the first two are collected automatically at the start of the game by Ribbon and Kirby. The Crystal Shards can be found in the open, hidden behind obstacles, or given after defeating bosses. Every boss at the end of the worlds will give a Crystal Shard upon being defeated.

In Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Ribbon's Crystal is only available via collecting all of the Crystal Shards. Otherwise, the bad ending occurs after defeating Miracle Matter . Ribbon's Crystal enables Kirby and Ribbon to fly around in a full 3D space while shooting Crystal Shards in order to defeat 0², the true final boss.
